BRUSSELS — A ten-year-old Belgium girl gave birth to a baby boy last year, according to Expatica News.

The pregnancy came as a 'big' surprise to the girl, says Dr. Robert Chef who examined the girl.

According to Expatica, the doctor said the 10-year-old came to him with "unexplained abdominal pain." He said he noticed the girl gained some weight and after examining her, he discovered that she was nine months pregnant, the website reported.

The father was reportedly a 13-year-old schoolmate.

From the Expatica story:

Yesterday the medical weekly De Huisarts reported that 57 Belgian 10-year-olds had been prescribed a birth control pill last year. Some for medical reasons, but others for actual birth control.

WHAAAA?

I can't wrap my head around this one.

I can't wrap my head around this one.

I know, Viki, it is difficult to fathom.

I have heard similar stories from school nurses working in U.S. elementary schools. I often thought that they were perhaps exaggerating. But, I guess not.

If you think that's bad you should look at the numebr of 12 year olds and under actually giving birth in the UK, let alone the ones that take the pill.

Yes, it appears to be a worldwide issue. I think most of he times such births simply don't garner any press.

A lot of times birth control is prescribed to younger girls to help with acne. It's still pretty bad that it says it is for actual birth control in some cases.

An excellent point Bazards.

No, the article does not appear to mention whether or not that issue was separated out.

Many pregnancies in young girls are the result of incest. But that was not at all the case here.

That's something I'd never thought of before, and another issue towards the 'young girls on the pill' numbers. I wonder how many will find an excuse to take it so they don't have to tell the truth in these instances.

That is an interesting point, Biscuit. I never thought of that but it is something to consider.

not really all that long a go this wasnt as uncommon as the outrage makes it seem.
\Sex is a primal urge, and yeah at 10 i thought about sex, doubt i could have gotten everything to come together to get a girl pregnant, but as outrageous as it seems, kids are people too.

I dont condone it, just saying it wasnt that uncommon not long ago, and you can imagine that some countries are still where we were at back then.

but anyway the record is 5 years old, which blows my mind.

The 5-year-old is unusual from a physiological perspective.

"The grandmother immediately took charge of the baby. She said she would raise it as her own child."

Without wanting to be too judgemental, one has to wonder if they are a generally young family anyway for the grandmother to do this.

I wondered the same thing. What about the girl's mother?

Robert Chef says the parents of the girl did not respond angrily. "The grandmother immediately took charge of the baby. She said she would raise it as her own child."

Viki and Biscuit.

I am thinking that this paragraph is just worded poorly.

I think perhaps the "grandmother" is the Ten-year-olds mother, and the grandmother of the baby.

That is not clear, though, and I could be wrong.

Checked it in the original language and yes, the mother of the 10-year old will take care of the baby. Apparently because she did such a good job on her own child.

Aah, now that makes more sense. Yes, and not so unusual, really.

Thank, Trevor. I suppose I just assumed "grandmother" was the grandmother of the 10-year-old. I don't know why!

Fox news. Always on the cutting edge of journalism. I might have to print this article. Toilet paper is a scarce commodity around here.

Sturat, Expatica is the article's source, not Fox news.

Fox news is simply printing it. So if you are going to complain your complaint might appear more credible if you, at least, cite the correct source.

From a journalistic perspective about 90 percent of Fox news articles are sourced from the AP wire, Reuters or other news papers such as the LA times or the New York Times.

So, I guess, if you really think about it logically, your beef is with News gathering organizations in general?

You could of course write your own News article on Newsvine, if your are unhappy with the media in general.

I notice on your profile that you have zero articles posted and only one seed.

But in the end, here's a radical but logical thought..., if you don't like reading Fox news articles, feel free to exercise your free will by not opening them. Problem solved. So simple, No?
