Secret Service Catch Mexican Official Nabbing White House BlackBerries

advertisement

Whether he was up to no good or simply desperate to play BrickBreaker, a Mexican press attache was caught on camera by Secret Service pocketing several White House BlackBerries during a recent meeting in New Orleans, FOX News has learned.

Sources with knowledge of the incident said the official, whose first name is Rafael, took six or seven of the handheld devices from a table outside a special room in the hotel where the Mexican delegation was meeting with President Bush.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

it didn't take long before Secret Service officials reviewed videotape taken by a surveillance camera and found footage showing "Rafael" absconding with the BlackBerries.

The sources said they believe no further actions were taken against him by American authorities.

Seriously??? This guy steals government blackberries with potentially sensitive information and we don't do a damn thing? Yet we approve torture for innocent reporters in prison camps?? Hell in a handbasket... that's where this is going....

Everyone entering the room was required to leave their cell phones, BlackBerries and other such devices on the table, a commonplace practice when high-level meetings are held. American officials discovered their missing belongings when they were leaving the session.

I am surprised that these items were not locked up in a safe, and were left unattended. Gees!

LMAO! Generational gap here. When I read the title of this thing, I thought the guy was picking berries off a bush out on the White House lawn. I thought it was going to be a funny story. Getting old, I guess.

I'm really surprised they haven't done anything, or that this hasn't caused a bigger international incident. Theft of White House property by foreign officials seems to be pretty major.

I have a huge black berry patch across the street, and I was about to scream "LIES" cause they are just flowering now. But if this guy gave me his addy, i'd send him a small blackberry basket, in the spirit of good relations with our neighbor downstairs.

Same here. I hadn't ever even seen a BlackBerry (the phone/e-mail thingy) until early 2007. I still don't get the appeal of having access to my e-mail 24/7. Maybe I'm too old to be 25.

It could be a matter of embarrassment - if the White House officials don't have passwords set on their Blackberries, they might want as little publicity as possible. And they also wouldn't want to advertise the fact that these were left unguarded.

I wonder if Mexico's press is anything like ours. If so, I would assume the guy took them just hoping to get a great story out of it - but somehow I doubt that.

"I wonder if Mexico's press is anything like ours. If so, I would assume the guy took them just hoping to get a great story out of it"

He was a diplomatic official, not a reporter.

'Press attaches' have been used as a cover for intelligence officers before....so my first thought was maybe that's what was going on. But if that was the case why beat feet for the airport so quickly? Why not just go straight to the Mexican embassy or consulate where the 'blackberrys' could be hacked without disturbance, or at least hidden in a diplomatic pouch, and protected from interception and recovery?

No....he's probably just another corrupt Mexican official who saw an opportunity to steal something that he could use to make some money by selling....as hardware, or for info to any interested bidder he could find....not necessarily a news service. An international company; another government; his own government; who cares.

I just hope this teaches somebody to be more watchful, and that they formally expel and ban him from re-entry permanently.

Yes. Good point. Experience is the best teacher.

I have met a number of people who have been arrested in foreign countries for minor traffic violations, or disorderly conduct charges for defending their position to a law officer in other countries.

It was quite an ordeal, for them. It made them appreciate the freedoms and rights we all have in America.

When I read this I at first thought it was about fruit. However like everyone else the first thing that went through my mind is how they were unguarded, there might have been some information in them that would not have been for the public eye. I was totally irritated by, when the criminal was caught he at first lied and then after he said it was a mistake and declared diplomatic immunity. When you read about diplomatic immunity it states its to be used for work purposes and not for personal gain. I think this guys immunity should have been revoked for getting caught in a lie. I wonder Mexico will now fire him from his position or if in the future we need to have someone watch over him, should he return.

Sounds like the Secret Service needs to upgrade their training if this kind of thing can go on right under their noses. Aren't they supposed to be proactive NOT reactive? That's scary.

This diplomatic immunity thing needs to be revised because it is being abused. Did Bin Laden's family get out of the US so quickly after 9/11 because of some type of immunity? Can't remember.

This stuff is a great opportunity for well placed provocative "disinformation". Perhaps a few interesting entries in the blackberry "calendar" or "to do list" such as:

May 1, 2008: Roll tanks to quell expected "May Day" protests by commie element of illegal immigrant population. Note to self, "this time, no blanks".

May 5, 2008: Meet with France, regarding re-acquisition of former territories.

July 4, 2008: Practice favorite hymn for recital: "...from the halls of Montezuma..."

June 15, 2008: Security council meeting regarding giving Alta California (code name, Los Pendejos) back to Mexico to get them of our own frickin' hair.

Enjoy, Amigos! ;)

I do have a healthy dark side and a wandering mind... though I try to harness it for good purposes, and limit it mostly to humor! Here's a bibliography for my nefarious coincidental "to do" entries:

May 1... May day a.k.a. international workers day... Though not it's only heritage, "Communist and anarchist organizations and their affiliated unions universally conduct street marches on this day.", especially in the latter context. "Coincidentally", it was recently chosen for a immigration "strike" and rally. Not a wise choice to show how friendly and "American" a body of immigrants are (while also waving Mexican flags) while making demands on the American public! A PR blunder, but admirable in honesty, at least. ;) Also informative regarding the higher level organizers, more than the general participants (though a general cultural ignorance and insensitivity is partly relevant -- and indicative of our failing to properly educate and assimilate).

May 5... Cinco de mayo... Not a "Mexican independence day from Spain" as is sometimes assumed, but rather a celebration of key victory over France, indeed related to independence! Hence, my devilishly playful allusion to France's "territorial" interests. (Also, not as celebrated by the indigenous in Mexico... who are often those who seek better opportunity to the north)

July 4... Date is obviously patriotic, and phrase is from Marine Corp. Hymn regarding the holding of Chapultepec Castle near Mexico City in MexAm war. Ooh-rah ;)

June 15... (the date is apparently only pinned down to 14th - 17th range) but represents California's Bear Flag Revolt against Mexican rule, and combined with a dig on "the left coast" by saying we should just cut them from the union and happily return them to Mexico! I won't explain the "code name", you'll have to research that one if you are unfamiliar! Let's just say it's a wee-bit rude. ;)

Just having a little dirty fun and blending in some info and opinion!
