Novak: Michelle Obama Nixed Hillary As VP

advertisement

Conservative columnist Robert Novak alleges in a new column that Michelle Obama has nixed the idea of Hillary Clinton as a VP candidate:

Close-in supporters of Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign are convinced he never will offer the vice presidential nomination to Sen. Hillary Clinton for one overriding reason: Michelle Obama.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The Democratic front-runner's wife did not comment on other rival candidates for the party's nomination, but she has been sniping at Clinton since last summer.

No, but it is a really smart action.

So far as i'm concerned, when people talk about how great a VP she would be, they are advertising the fact that they think in sound bytes and don't really know what's going on.

She has directly harmed Obama's chances in the next election. If he were to accept her as VP, every statement he's made about "new politics' will look less real. He will plainly have little control over his VP, as nobody has much control over Hillary. It's all about her; she doesn't care much about her party.

Accepting her would make him weak, and more importantly it would make him look weak. It would directly cost him votes on both sides of the aisle. Many moderate Republicans who would be willing to vote for Obama would vote against him if she enters the picture, and there are some Democrats who would shift as well.

But above all that, why occupy the second most important position with someone whom he can't trust? How much authority do you really suppose he would feel able to delegate with her?

Everybody has a right to their opinion of course. Even really dumb ones.

What will be that price?

My guess is that depends on how far she decides ito piss off the Democratic party. She's already into that territory, the longer she goes, the more animosity she builds.

Let's face it ... they MUST be trying to make deals with her RIGHT NOW. The longer she puts them off, the less likely she will get anything out of the deal.

Remember, this is go-for-broke, scorthed-earth Clinton. SHE decides how ugly this will get, and does not give a rat's ass WHO becomes president in 2009 if its not HER.

Well, I'd be fine with that position, although I still think even that is paying a price. I'm guessing he'd be watching her like a hawk every minute.

One of the ideas I've heard floated is that they juggle positions and make compromises to make her leader of the senate, giving her valuable committees and so on. The thing is, that if the Democrats increase their majority, that might end up making her more powerful in the Senate then it would as VP.

My guess is she will become Senate Majority Leader because Obama will need someone rough, tough and ruthless to pass his legislation over the sure filibusters that will come from the Republicans. By that point I hope Hillary is more about kneecapping the Republicans rather than getting revenge for Obama derailing her storybook ending.

The media's deliberate distortions of Michelle Obama as "hostile" will haunt her for as long as her husband holds public office, since they've been unable to attempt to discredit her in any other sustainable way. I doubt that even Barack Obama himself can control who is going to be his vice-presidential running mate.

Yes, Michelle Obama has been tarnished in the press, yet Cindy McCain's criminal conviction for stealing prescription drugs has hardly been given any coverage.

Caroaber, It would have been nice if you had linked to a source about Mrs McCain's drug use. It is true that she did abuse prescription drugs, but she was never criminally convicted.

I do understand and believe you've made an excellent contrast, I wanted to be absolutely sure it was correct before I repeated the story. The fact that she was allowed to enter a diversion program given the severity of her crimes is immoral.

Wikipedia also gives some details about the prescriptions theft if you type in Cindy McCain. Her case is a clear example of unequal justice for the rich. But I had heard/read of the disposition of the case referred to as a conviction, so thank you, Kokayi, for the clarification.

Maybe Cindy could write a book about it ?...Like Obama.
Or is that only if you use street drugs?

Obama's use of cocaine and marijuana as a young man, which Obama has been open about in his memoir and on the trail.

Everyone at this level also has somebody to fix things for them, whether their name be McCain, Clinton, or Obama, and whether their gender be male or female. This point is about the differences between media's treatment of Michelle Obama vs. Cindy McCain, the partisanship has already been determined by their own biased practices. At this point in time the only place I read about Cindy McCain's issues was right here in this thread, yet, despite whatever point gpnavonod is making, Michelle Obama is rarely if ever spoken of in favorable terms by the media, other than biographically. It's not about just slinging mud, it's an observation.

This is probably true and I think it is intelligent of Michelle Obama to nix such a move. Not only would it be bad for Barack but I think it would be bad for the country. Hillary would expect the kind of partnership from Barack that she got out of Bill and that would make her an even more involved VP than Dick Cheney. Also, I doubt that Michelle wants a woman to enter the scene who is intent on putting her husband's balls in a jar under the kitchen sink.

@gpnavonod:

G.W. Bush didn't have the nerve to admit to his cocaine use. Sen. Obama did. Your use of the word felon is disingenuous, as Obama is not, and was not ever, a felon. Call it luck if you want, but facts are facts. No arrest and no criminal charges= not a felon.

Who supplied W.'s cocaine? The former alcoholic and current president had all the privileges and protections that go with daddy's money. If you want to chase a story, why not chase that one? Obama stopped his usage as a young adult. Not so the heavy drinker who finally accepted Laura Bush's ultimatum.
